Casper Ruud vs Matteo Arnaldi

Casper Ruud will begin his campaign at the Madrid Open. Ruud faced successive third round exits at the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open. The Norwegian won the Estoril Open title before that and now aims to win his second title on clay courts this year. He is the third seed at Madrid Open and received a bye from the first round.

Matteo Arnaldi is a qualifier in the tournament. He made it to the main draw and deeated Benoit Paire in three sets in the first round. The Italian will face a big challenge against Casper Ruud.

Andrey Rublev vs Stan Wawrinka

Fifth seed Andrey Rublev will face former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the second round. Rublev enters the Madrid Open after finishing as runner-up at Srpska Open last week. Rublev had earlier won the Monte Carlo Masters title and now aims to win his second title of the season.

Stan Wawrinka clinched a hard-fought 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win against Maxime Cressy in the first round. Before the Madrid Open, Wawrinka bowed out from the first round at Srpska Open. He is aiming to seal his first third round appearance on clay courts this season.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Emil Ruusuvuori

Carlos Alcaraz is aiming to lift his second successive title in the ATP Tour. He will begin his campaign in the Madrid Open by facing Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. Alcaraz has already won three titles in the ATP Tour this year. The World No.2 is looking to make another deep run in the tournament.

Ruusuvuori meanwhile won his first round contest in straight sets against Ugo Humbert. Before entering the Madrid Open, Ruusuvuori entered the third round at Barcelona Open.

Women’s Singles

Jessica Pegula vs Magdalena Frech

Third seed Jessica Pegula will get her Madrid Open campaign underway by facing Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the second round at Madrid Open. Pegula last played at the Charleston Open and made it to the semifinal in the tournament. She has consistently made deep runs in the WTA Tour but is yet to win a title.

Magdalena Frech is a qualifier in the tournament. She made it to the main draw and clinched a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Jasmine Paolini in the first round. Frech is in action in her first clay court tournament this year.

Iga Swiatek vs Julia Grabher

Fresh after winning her Stuttgart Open 2023 title, Iga Swiatek enters the Madrid Open 2023. Swiatek will face Austria’s Julia Grabher in the second round. Swiatek has won the Qatar Open, Dubai Tennis Championships and Stuttgart Open titles this year.

Julia Grabher began the tournament in the qualifiers. She made was the second seed and clinched straight set victories in both her qualifier matches to enter the main draw. In the first round, she defeated Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets to set up clash against Iga Swiatek.
