Atharva Taide’s IPL debut

Atharva Taide was picked up by the Punjab Kings for INR 20 lakhs last year and while he didn’t get a chance to play last season, he made his IPL debut in 2023 with the match against Lucknow Super Giants on April 15. While, the 23-year-old had a forgettable outing on his debut, getting dismissed on a duck, he showed why Punjab Kings has high regard for the Vidarbha batter. On Friday, while chasing 257 runs against Lucknow Super Giants, Taide scored his maiden half-century in the tournament.

However, Taide’s success in the IPL is not just a flash in the pan. Ahead of the IPL 2023, Taide had scored 499 runs in seven Ranji Trophy games last season, at an average of 45.36. This included one hundred and three fifties. In January 2023, he hit his maiden First-Class ton with an unbeaten 112 against Punjab in Mohali.

Who is Atharva Taide?

Born on April 26, 2000, in Akola, Maharashtra, Taide is a left-handed batter and a left-arm orthodox bowler. At just 23 years of age, Taide has already shown immense potential. Taide’s early cricketing career began in domestic cricket, where he made his debut in the List A format for Vidarbha against Baroda in September 2018. He then made his First-Class debut for Vidarbha against Gujarat in December of the same year. Taide’s impressive performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the Vidarbha team for the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he made his debut in T20 cricket.

Taide caught the attention when he scored a triple hundred in the Cooch Behar Trophy final against Madhya Pradesh in 2018. The most significant moment in his cricketing career so far came on April 15, 2023, when he made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Punjab Kings against the Lucknow Super Giants.
