Karun Nair, Shreyas Gopal leave Karnataka ahead of 2023-24 domestic season

Karnataka’s domestic veterans Karun Nair and Shreyas Gopal have decided to move out of their home state ahead of the upcoming domestic season. Nair, who is the second Indian to score a triple-century in Test cricket, will join Vidarbha, while all-rounder Gopal will play for Kerala.

Nair and Gopal were part of the Karnataka team that won the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Irani Cup in consecutive seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also represented the state in various limited-overs tournaments and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

However, both players have faced inconsistent selection and limited opportunities in recent times. Nair, who last played for India in 2018, has been overlooked for the national team despite scoring heavily in domestic cricket.

The former Karnataka skipper scored 11 hundred and 16 fifties in first-class cricket for the state with the highest score of 328 in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu.

He expressed his gratitude to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and teammates for their support and guidance over the years.

Gopal, on the other hand, has moved to Kerala to partner with all-rounder Jalaj Saxena and strengthen Kerala’s spin-bowling core.

Gopal’s memorable performance for Karnatka came in 2013-14 when he picked up a hat-trick against Rest of India to clinch the Irani Cup. He was a key allrounder for Karnataka across formats for next 5 seasons. However, his game time was reduced in last two seasons especially in the white-ball formats, which led him to look for a move out of the state.

Nair and Gopal are not the only players who have opted to switch states this season. KV Siddharth and Rohan Kadam, two other Karnataka batsmen, have signed up with Goa. Siddharth was the highest run-getter for Karnataka in the 2021-22 season, but was dropped the following season. Kadam is a prolific run-scorer in T20 cricket, but has not been given enough chances in other formats.
