How can England still qualify for semi-final after loss against Sri Lanka?

England cricket team suffered a humiliating loss against Sri Lanka in World Cup 2023 match at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Thursday. After bundling out on 156, the Jos Buttler-led side could not hold Sri Lanka who chased down the target comfortably. The defending champions now face a tough task in order to qualify for the World Cup semifinals.

The defeat against Sri Lanka not only dented team’s morale, but also have put them on the brink of elimination. The side now is languishing at the ninth place in World Cup 2023 points table with 4 more matches to go.

How can England still make it to World Cup semi-final?

While it is highly unlikely for England to qualify for semi-final, there still a mathematical chance for the defending champions.

England’s next four remaining matches are all a must-win games. Assuming they win all 4 remaining games, the team would reach 10 points, which would not be enough for them to qualify provided their poor NRR as well.

The Jos Buttler-led side will have to hope for a few more upsets to have a chance to end up in top 4. Pakistan and Australia’s losses can give England a sniff in top 4 but it would still not guarantee their place. Three Lions’ next 4 matches are against India, Australia, Netherlands, and Pakistan. The team can take a chance on improving their NRR with matches against Pakistan and Netherlands.

England will next face India on October 29 in Lucknow.
