Fact Check: Did Ben Stokes refuse to shake hands with Jadeja and Sundar after Manchester draw?

Drama ensued in the final half-hour in Manchester as India rescued a draw in the IND vs ENG 4th Test. With the game drifting to a stalemate, Ben Stokes offered to shake hands to call the game. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused in pursuit of their respective centuries. The left-handed duo eventually got their milestones, and only then settled for a draw at Old Trafford on Day 5.

Did Ben Stokes refuse to shake hands with Jadeja-Sundar?

Ben Stokes had a heated argument with Ravindra Jadeja after the India star refused to shake hands and settle for a draw. Stokes taunted him with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley for company, as England bowled their part time bowlers in the closing stages. Jadeja was on 89 when England offered the draw, with Harry Brook coming to bowl.

England just bowled in a way, where they wanted Jadeja and Washi to get to their tons, as soon as possible. The stump mic also caught Ben Stokes say, “You’re gonna get a Test hundred against Harry Brook?”

They did get their centuries and had elaborate celebrations helping India escape what was feared to be an innings defeat. A video later surfaced online where Stokes did not shake hands with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.

And while that would suggest sour grapes after what followed in Manchester, it wasn’t the case. Stokes was in fact the first to shake hands and call the game off for a draw. A picture of him and Jadeja was even posted by England cricket’s official X handle on social media.

After the game, Ben Stokes lavished praise on the Indian team for their resilience. The England captain said he bowled Joe Root and Harry Brook to avoid injuries to his main bowlers after they spent long hours in the field.

“Soon as it got to the point where draw was inevitable, I wasn’t going to risk my bowlers. I also had to tell Harry Brook please don’t do anything to yourself. Just get through that period and don’t risk any proper bowler. There will be massive satisfaction for Sundar and Jadeja of being 100 not out and walking out after saving your team and keeping the series alive,” he added.
