“Have never cheated; had suicidal thoughts”: Yuzvendra Chahal speaks on divorce with ex-wife Dhanashree

“Power couple” is an adjective that we often use for celebrity couples that lay down goals for life partners. Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were in that “power couple” category until a news shocked the entire world when the pair decided to part ways mutually. All this came when Chahal was dropped from the Indian national team, had received trolling from everywhere and was perhaps in the lowest point of his life. Now, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) spinner has opened up.

Chahal opens up on battling depression after divorce

For the first time since their separation, Chahal has laid bare the emotional turmoil he went through. The leg-spinner admitted that false allegations in the wake of his divorce nearly broke him. “I had suicidal thoughts, I was tired of my life, I used to cry for 2 hours. I used to sleep just for 2 hours. It went for 40-45 days. I wanted a break from cricket,” Chahal shared in an interview on Figuring Out with Raj Shamani.

He confessed that the constant scrutiny made it impossible for him to focus on cricket. “I was so busy in cricket. I was not able to concentrate. Used to share suicidal thoughts with my friend. I used to get scared,” he added. Sleepless nights, stress, and public judgment turned his world upside down, forcing him to take a hard look at his personal well-being.

“Never cheated in my life”: Chahal slams rumours

Chahal was also firm in dismissing the narratives that questioned his character. “I think when my divorce happened, people alleged me of being a cheater. I have never cheated in my life. I am not that kind of a person. You won’t find anyone more loyal than me,” he said.

“Because I have two sisters and have grown up with them since childhood, I know how to respect women, because my parents have taught me how to respect them. It is not necessary that if my name is being linked up to someone, people get to write anything about it, only for views.”

Chahal and Dhanashree, who tied the knot in December 2020, officially ended their marriage on February 20, 2025. Their separation had been preceded by weeks of speculation, including when the two unfollowed each other on Instagram, indicating that the couple is going to split.

Cryptic posts from both sides only added to the frenzy, with Chahal even sharing a heartfelt story ahead of the divorce proceedings that read: “God has protected me more times than I can count… Thank you, God, for always being there even when I don’t know it.”
