BCCI part ways with Indian team member who served for 15 years

The Indian cricket team has bid farewell to one of its most recognisable behind-the-scenes figures. Rajeev Kumar, the team’s long-serving masseur, has been released by the BCCI, drawing curtains on a stint that lasted close to a decade and a half.

Team India masseur bids adieu

Kumar, who first came into the national set-up in 2016, became a crucial part of the dressing room over the years. From the highs of World Cup triumphs to long overseas tours, his presence was a constant. Always spotted near the boundary line with his familiar smile, he was among the first faces fans and players alike would notice around the team.

Confirming his departure, Kumar penned a short note on Instagram calling his time with the side a privilege and honour. “It’s been a privilege and honour to serve the Indian cricket team for a decade (2016-2025). Thank you God for the opportunity truly grafteful and looking forward.”

Unsurprisingly, fast bowlers shared a strong bond with him. After long, punishing spells, it was often Kumar who helped them recover in time for the next day’s grind. He was known to work late into the night, taking care of stiff backs and sore hamstrings, while also preparing energy drinks and mixes tailored to each player’s body.

The camaraderie between him and the squad was well documented. Mohammed Shami once shared a birthday picture with Kumar and Ishant Sharma, a reminder of how close he was to the players. Yuzvendra Chahal too acknowledged him as one of the “unsung heroes” of Indian cricket, a man whose contribution never made headlines but often decided how fresh the team felt on the field.
