India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has suffered a fresh injury setback just when things seemed to be falling into place for him again. The stylish right-hander, who returned to form in the recently concluded Australia series, is now facing a race against time to be fit for the upcoming ODIs against South Africa starting November 30 in Ranchi.
How Shreyas Iyer got injured
The incident took place during the third ODI in Sydney when Iyer dived to take a sharp catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. While completing the catch, he landed awkwardly on his left side and immediately clutched his ribs in pain. It was an incredible effort by Iyer as it is never easy for a player to run behind and take an overhead catch. India has been one of the worst fielding sides since 2023 but Iyer ain’t one of the reasons for it.
Team physio Kamlesh Jain rushed to the field and helped him off. Initially, it looked like a hip concern, but scans later confirmed that Iyer had suffered an injury to his left rib cage. The BCCI soon issued a statement, saying, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.“
Shreyas Iyer injury update
A BCCI source later told PTI that Iyer could be out for at least three weeks.
“Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk and he will have to be out of action for minimum three weeks. He will have to report to the Centre of Excellence on his return. Further reports are awaited before one can conclude if he will require more time for recovery. If it is a hairline fracture then it might take longer,” the source revealed.
When asked about his availability for the South Africa series, the official added, “It is too early to say. If it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play), then there is a chance that it could be touch and go before November 30.”
How crucial is Iyer to India’s ODI setup?
For India, Iyer’s absence would’ve been massive if he was certain to miss some matches. After all, the 30-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers at number four since 2022, ending the country’s long search for stability in that position. He has scored 1430 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate nearing 100 at number four in this period. Even in the second ODI at Adelaide, Iyer looked fluent, scoring 61 with a new side-on stance.
While the reports say he may be out for a minimum of three weeks, it all depends on the nature of the injury. If he endures a hairline fracture, he may have to miss the three-match ODI home series against South Africa next month.
