DRS Nov 27: Sanju Samson overshadowed, CSK batter makes history & Gautam Gambhir to be sacked?

Team India hit a new low under Gautam Gambhir. The Indian head coach, who took over from Rahul Dravid last year, has managed to endure another Test series whitewash at home. If the 0-3 loss to New Zealand, the first Test series loss at home after 12 years, wasn’t enough. As if losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) for the first time since 2015 wasn’t enough, India now got completely outplayed by South Africa. Apart from this, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 also commenced as a CSK batter hit one of the fastest T20 centuries ever. Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav were amongst the runs as well. On that note, we take a look at the top stories from the day.

Gambhir to be sacked?

India coach Gautam Gambhir has responded to ever growing calls for his removal after another Test series defeat, this time to South Africa. Under Gambhir, India have lost five of their last seven home Tests and failed to win a single series against any top-seven side. India have won just seven of 19 Tests under him and have a have a W/L ratio only better than BAN & ZIM. He is also the first Indian coach to oversee two home whitewashes and the end of India’s 12-year unbeaten home streak. Asked about his future, Gambhir said the decision rests with the BCCI, while pointing to white-ball successes like the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. Read more here.

Sanju Samson overshadowed?

Sanju Samson spent time in the middle as an opener, got to a well-made half-century, and yet somehow walked off as a supporting act in his own script. Kerala’s chase of 177 against Odisha was lopsided, but it belonged almost entirely to Rohan Kunnummal, whose 121 off 60 balls shredded the bowling. Samson’s 51 off 41 was neat but his strike rate of 124.39 looked almost pedestrian next to Kunnummal’s 201.66 carnage. Captaining Kerala, Samson opened and did the stabilising job. They needed fire, and Kunnummal provided it alone, cracking 10 sixes. The pair’s 177-run stand created SMAT history as the highest successful chase without losing a wicket. Read more here.

CSK batter scripts history

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained player Urvil Patel has smashed another record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hitting the third-fastest hundred in the tournament’s history. The 27-year-old Gujarat captain blasted a 31-ball century against Services in Hyderabad, finishing with 119 off 37 deliveries, including 12 fours and 10 sixes. His effort powered Gujarat to an eight-wicket win while chasing 183, built on a 174-run opening stand with Priyesh Desai. Patel already owns the fastest SMAT century (28 balls) and now features twice in the top three quickest tons. Urvil was signed mid-season by CSK in IPL 2025 as a replacement to Vansh Bedi. Anti-Gautam Gambhir fans hurl slogans

The atmosphere at Barsapara Stadium turned boisterous to their home team after India were humiliated by 408 runs in the second Test, completing a 2-0 whitewash to South Africa. It was India’s biggest defeat by runs in Test history, and tempers in the stands boiled over. Fans unleashed loud chants of “Gautam Gambhir haaye haaye“, targeting the head coach under whom India have won just 7 of 19 Tests, including five defeats at home and two whitewashes. As players walked the boundary, Mohammed Siraj angrily gestured for silence, while batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shouted back at spectators. Instead of celebration for Guwahati’s first Test, the day ended in boos, frustration and humiliation. Read more here.
