Gautam Gambhir won’t be sacked, BCCI to avoid knee-jerk reaction after whitewash vs SA

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ruled out the sacking of head coach Gautam Gambhir after the whitewash in the series against South Africa. The former Indian cricketer, who took over from Rahul Dravid in 2024, faced his third Test series loss and second whitewash at home in 1 year’s time as India lost to South Africa by 408 runs in the 2nd Test. While Gambhir left it for the BCCI to decide on his future after the 0-2 defeat, the board has now revealed its future course of action.

Relief for Gambhir, Team India

As per The Indian Express, a BCCI official stated that the board will not rush to take any decision as the team is in a transition phase. The official told the publication that there was no question about sacking Gambhir as head coach as his contract is in place till 2027 in addition to the fact that the T20 World Cup is just around the corner. The BCCI official further claimed that the board will hold talks with the selectors and the team management going forward, adding that there will be no knee-jerk reaction.

The BCCI will not rush in taking any decision, the team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will speak to selectors and team management going ahead but there won’t be any knee jerk action,” a BCCI official said.

Gambhir’s list of accomplishments in Test cricket so far are as follows – 2-0 win against Bangladesh, 0-3 loss to New Zealand, 1-3 loss to Australia, 2-2 draw against England, 2-0 win against West Indies and now a 0-2 loss against South Africa.

It is for the BCCI to decide. This is something that I said in my first-ever press conference when I became the head coach as well. Indian cricket is important; I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England and won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning,” said Gambhir while speaking to reporters after South Africa handed India its largest Test defeat ever in Guwahati.
