The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given the highest rating for the pitch in Perth that was used for the AUS vs ENG 1st Ashes Test. The game, which was held at the Optus Stadium, lasted for just 2 days as Australia chased the 205-run target with ease. Meanwhile, the ICC is yet to deliver its verdict on the surface that was used for the IND vs SA 1st Test which took place at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
ICC gives verdict on pitch for 1st Ashes Test
As per ESPNCricinfo, the pitch used for the AUS vs ENG 1st Ashes Test was graded ‘very good’ in the official report from the match referee Ranjan Madugalle. The game was the shortest Test in the history of Ashes (in terms of balls bowled) and the second shortest Test to be completed in Australia as just 847 deliveries were bowled. 19 wickets fell on Day 1 of the contest. On Day 2, Travis Head slammed 123 runs off 83 balls to guide Australia to an easy win.
Under the ICC’s four-tier ratings system, “very good” is reflects a pitch with “good carry, limited seam movement, and consistent bounce early in the match, allowing for a balanced contest between batters and bowlers”.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what verdict the ICC gives for the three-day IND vs SA 1st Test in Kolkata. Unlike the Ashes 1st Test, the game at the Eden Gardens saw spinners, especially South Africans, extract the most from the surface. Batters clearly struggled to score as neither side managed to go past 200 runs in the Test match. India eventually lost the game by 30 runs and subsequently, head coach Gautam Gambhir defended the pitch rolled out for the game, claiming that there were no demons in it and instead blamed the batters.
