History created! The Indian women’s cricket team went on to win their first ever World Cup, as they beat South Africa by 52 runs on the night of the final on Sunday. And such was their achievement, that even the players found it tough to believe.. tough to understand the magnitude of what they had achieved with their superlative performances.
Right after the victory, the Indian players were not only ecstatic but also expressed, what was going through their minds. First up, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, who came up with an excellent run out Taznim Brits, and catch of Laura Wolvaardt dedicated the World Cup win Pratika Rawal. Soon, Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh and coach Amol Mazumdar followed.
Amanjot Kaur Dedicates Victory to Injured Pratika Rawal
“It’s been such a recovery – from where I was a year ago to where I am now. This means a lot. You can see the crowd – they’re all around us, the energy is incredible. We’re just getting started. We’re going to take it to the next level and dominate across the world, in every moment,” she said on JioHotstar.
“I just want to say congratulations to everyone – my family, everyone watching in India and around the world. They’ve supported me, sitting at home, cheering, believing. They’re the ones who helped me the most. I’m so grateful we could do this together. It’s amazing. The fans have been unbelievable. This one’s for all of them – for every woman, for everyone watching, and especially for Pratika. Not everything in life is good – but there’s good in everything. I’m just grateful. Truly grateful.”
Just the Start, Says Richa Ghosh
“It (World Cup win) means everything. We’ve been waiting for this for such a long time. Winning this World Cup – it’s a dream come true. We’re world champions now. I can’t even describe what I’m feeling. Everyone’s watching us. It’s so emotional – it’s completely different. We said, this is the last day of the tournament. Whatever we have, we give it all.
“Whether it’s your body, your energy, your last bit of strength – we play for each other. That was our motto: give it everything. Yes, of course, there was pressure. The crowd was huge, the atmosphere was big. But I told myself, I’ve done the work – just trust myself. Everyone in the team believed I could finish it, and that belief helped me a lot.
Pratika Rawal ‘Can’t Express’..
“I can’t even express it. There are no words. This flag on my shoulder means so much. To be here with my team – it’s surreal. Injuries are part of the game. I’m just so happy I could still be part of this team. I love this team. I can’t express what I feel – we actually did it! We’re the first Indian team to win the World Cup in so long. The whole of India deserves this. Honestly, it was harder to watch than to play. Every wicket, every boundary – it gave me goosebumps. The energy, the crowd, the emotion – it was incredible.”
Coach Amol Mazumdar is Proud of Team India
“I’m speechless. Absolutely proud. They deserve every bit of this moment. The hard work, the belief – they’ve made every Indian proud. We never saw those as losses (talking about the losses in the group stage). We dominated most of those matches. We just needed to finish better – and once we did, there was no looking back. It’s a watershed moment (what does this mean to women’s cricket in India). The ripple effects will be felt for generations. Magical (talking about Shafali’s performance today). Semi-final, final – she turns up every time. Runs, wickets, catches – complete performance. Couldn’t be prouder.“
