Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja to go head-to-head in Ranji Trophy after ODI series loss to NZ

Shubman Gill’s tenure as the India skipper hasn’t started on a good note. A series loss against Australia (ODIs), a hammering at home by South Africa in Tests and now an unbelievable ODI series defeat against a second-string New Zealand side. However, the cricket doesn’t stop for him, as he is most likely to be seen in action in the Ranji Trophy 2025/26.

As per Cricbuzz, the Indian captain might turn up for Punjab in their first red-ball fixture of the second leg, which is against Saurashtra. Fascinatingly, Saurashtra will be bolstered by Ravindra Jadeja himself, as he is set to return as well.

Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill in focus

We already know that some of the stars who aren’t part of the T20 World Cup 2026 will turn up for their respective domestic teams to take part in the Ranji Trophy. A few days ago, news came about Mohammed Siraj leading Hyderabad in upcoming games as well. Now, two more names are likely to join the list in Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. While Jadeja is certain to play, Gill’s decision could be a last-minute one.

Both the stars had an ordinary ODI series against New Zealand. Jadeja, in particular, offered nothing in either department. He failed to bag a single wicket in the series, and with the bat, he scored just 43 runs at 14.33. Gill, meanwhile, had two fifties but the kind of talent he possesses, he should’ve scored more after settling in. Gill’s next assignment should definitely be the Ranji Trophy after his snub in the T20I team. The Indian captain has been vocal about preparing for the Test series well in advance and playing India’s premier domestic tournament would help him hone his batting skills further.

As of now, both Punjab and Saurashtra are in a tricky position as far as the Ranji Trophy is concerned. After five games, both teams have won just one game each, but Saurashtra have remained unbeaten. They have 13 points as compared to Punjab’s 11. Their upcoming match against each other will be played at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on January 22. Incidentally, the venue also hosted the recently happened 2nd IND vs NZ ODI, where Daryl Mitchell’s incredible ton helped the Kiwis chase down 285 runs with ease. Now from Indore (venue for 3rd ODI), both players will go back to Rajkot for the Ranji Trophy fixture.
